On your episode, March 7, you said to contact you with our decorating problems. I am fixing to paint whole house. I have a brown tile and beige carpeting. The tile has some gray with it, faint. I have white and taupe couches. Rest of furniture is oak. Picture frames are black with gold. I have greek pictures. Would like to paint the walls a gray with white trim. Can I get by with this or should I go the tan/beige walls with white. I have read that the gray is the new tan now. The gray would fit in my home as I have gray with brown, white and black curtains in all rooms.

Thank you for watching and sending in your decorating questions. Gray is a great choice! It is neutral, stylish and classic. The shade of gray is the issue. If you want to tie everything together, select a gray tone that has some brown in it. Take a small sample of the other objects you have in the room that you plan to keep. If this isn’t possible, then grab a handful of paint chips at the store that you think might work and bring them home and narrow your choices down to three. Return to the store and buy the smaller sample that you can of those 3 shades in the finish that you are going to end up using. Take the home and paint some good size squares on the wall. Be sure to paint a square near the floor so you can see how the tile and carpet work with the colors because these are big areas that you can’t afford to change at this time. Once you have made your selection you are on your way. I know everyone hates that sample step in the decorating process, but trust me, it can be fun and save you from a decorating disaster. It is your labor and time to redo a paint selection mistake that you want to avoid. Good luck. Send me photos when it is all beautiful.
