Inside the Dream Home

Vicki and Sloan begin their journey decorating the Susan G Komen for the Cure Charlotte Affiliate show house. They introduce you to the builder Eric Johnson and we get our first tour of the home.

Raised Flower Bed Gardening

Billy Styles and Sloan show us how to correctly drain and plant in a raised accent flower bed.  Installing a rubber membrane lining and drains in the bed will protect the home from any water damage.  If you don’t already have a drain you can drill a whole with a concrete bit and use pvc pipe and a screen to make your own.  Using a potting pot allows you to easily change your plant from season to season.  Place plants that will fit comfortably under your window to cut down on pruning. Make note of the rising and setting of the sun before you do any gardening.

Outdoor Décor

Vicki spices up the homes curb appeal with metal accessories from Garden Ridge. Positioning of a wall hanging is crucial, make sure to center your pieces.  Apply a lacquer to keep your outdoor frills from rusting.  Adding an artificial plant will bring a pop of color with virtually no maintenance.  If you want to add fresh seasonal flowers caulk your planter with a clear silicone.

Hanging Planter

Vicki plants and hangs a planter with black pepper, white pansies, and rosemary by the side door of the house. Pepper and rosemary plants are decorative and convenient for cooking.

Vicki and Sloan give the ins and outs of decorating a show house.

Designing the Boys Room

Vicki discusses the use of fabric, color, and art used in this tweenage boy’s room.

• The textured wallpaper and paint add a contrast to the wall.
• The look was inspired by antique car accessories and a houndstooth pattern was used for the bedding .
• The room is anchored with black rich furniture.

Putting the Room Together

Vicki begins putting the different elements for the boy’s room in place.

• The bedding and furniture are put in place.
• Andy Nance , our drapery expert, saves the day and alters the drapes to fit the windows.
• Mattresses are placed on the frames.

Entertainment Knook

Sloan and Andy Nance discuss the finished draperies.

• Andy explains a simple solution to a common drapery snag.  If your rod-pocket is too small to fit your rod through simply let out the seam to allow room for your rod to go through.

• The futon mattress with a black cover placed into the boy’s room out cove.
• David Baltzersen, of Zobo TV, joins Sloan and shows us how he installed an arm for the television to be easily hung on the out cove wall.

Jack and Jill Bathroom

Sloan takes us through the design decision made for this room.

• A black and silver decorative wallpaper was a neutral choice for this bathroom.
• Adding coordinating towels and greenery really punched up this normally basic area.
• Adding decorative greenery in a bathroom can really spice things up, but stick to artificial plants to cut down on maintenance.

Word Art

Vicki spices up a bland wall with stick-on phase from Wallworks.

• Vinyl letters are a quick and non-permanent fix to add interest to a wall.  Mounting the words at a diagonal eliminate the risk of putting the words up crooked and add some flair. For quick removal use a hairdryer and they will peel right off.

Decorating Solutions

Sloan decorates a difficultly shaped area in the boy’s room.

• A red nightstand is used to accent the end of the thin out cove.
• Toy airplanes are used to accessorize the height of the space. Sloan uses thumbtacks and thread to hang the light weight airplanes form the ceiling.  By hanging the planes at different heights it breaks up the awkward size of the out cove.

Tone-on-Tone with a Pop of Color

Vicki and Sloan begin placing furniture and bedding into the room.

• By using tone-on-tone furniture it makes the space appear large and the furniture looks like it is floating in the room.
• The queen size custom upholstered headboard is a simple statement and adds a relaxing touch to the room.
• Colorful bedding and accent pillows the perfect way to add color to a tone-on-tone room with out adding too much drama.  It also leaves your options open for changing out pillows seasonally to go for a different look throughout the year.

Guest Seating

• Another tone-on-tone item is added to the décor to give the room more depth. A french style sofa is placed on the opposite wall of the headboard. This sofa serves as a work of art and additional sleep space for visitors.

More Function

Vicki and Sloan add a secretary desk for supplementary storage and add another purpose to the room.

• A single piece of furniture makes the room multi-functional as a home office and guest suite

Accessorizing

Vicki and Sloan make decisions regarding the lamps of this room.

• A silver desk lamp is used to add a little pizzazz to the tone-on-tone décor
• Two white contemporary lamps modernize the antique secretary desk
• Tip: Don’t start accessorizing until your happy with the main décor of your room.
• Colorful silk flowers and art complete the look

Planning Ahead

Furniture Consultant, Patti Long discusses with Vicki plans for the custom headboard for the master bedroom.

Guest

Sloan and Greg Greenhalgh make plans for finishing up the construction of this space. Sloan shows off the lovely features of this half-bath.

• A round tile doesn’t chop a room up and it looks more spacious to the eye
• By tying together metallic flecks on the countertop and metallic accessories in the bedroom the area flows more and becomes a suite
• Keep your guest bath de-cluttered to make guests feel more welcome

• It is always wise to hang draperies beneath crown molding.  It is always better for your draperies to be too long rather than too short.
• Puddling your drapes is an easy way to mask drapes that are too long and it adds a unique touch to any room.

Decorating with Color

The teenage girl’s room is given a project runway theme.

• Decorating with a pumpkin and raspberry color scheme can really bring any room alive.  The fabric used in this room is prefect for a young girl but can still transition into a more adult look.
• A dramatic touch was added to this room with fabric covering an gold antiqued style chair Tip: if you can’t find the exact look you’re going for with existing upholstered furniture, find a fabric you love and create your own!
• A tangerine colored dresser was used to anchor the playful look of the entire room

Bulletin Board

A cheap and easy way to contribute some color to the room along with some function is to make your own bulletin board.

Materials:

Frame (Find one you like at any discount store)

Homasote

Fabric (should be 2” longer around than board)

Foam backing

Staple Gun

6” of wire

Decorative Border (optional)

1. Purchase all your materials.  First purchase your frame and then you can work around that piece. Buy a piece of homesoat from any home goods store that and cut it down to fit your frame.

2. Measure out all your materials and cut them size.  Your fabric should be 2” longer all the way around than you homasote.  The backing and homasote should match up.

3. Make sure your fabric is lying flat underneath the board and pull it up over the homasote.  While holding the fabric in place use a staple gun and place staples about an inch apart from each other all the way down the board.

4. When you have completed one side flip the board around fold the next length of fabric of the piece and put several staples in to secure it in the corner. Make sure you are checking the fabric for wrinkling and repeat the same steps.

5. You can use a standard or fabric glue to add your decoration.

Tip: This is a fun project, so don’t take it too seriously.  Nothing is exact just make it work!

6. Then using double stick tape mount the frame to your bulletin board.

7. Attach wire using the staple gun, making the bulletin board simple to hang

Romantic Art

Sloan and Vicki took simple sketches and framed then to add more interest to the décor of the room

When hanging art, first move the pieces around on the ground until you get your desired design.

Trace and cut craft paper to mimic the frames that you have. Using a pen or pencil, mark where the hanging wire falls on the craft paper.  Once you have done this arrange the craft paper on the wall

and you can hammer your nails without having to guesstimate where the wire fall.

Dramatic Drapes

Our friend Andy Nance helps hang out beautifully striped drapes, in this girl’s bedroom.  A lot of detail on the drapes added a dramatic touch to the already interesting window architecture.

A fast, easy, and inexpensive way to hang drapes is by stapling them to a 2×4 that is cut to fit your drape.  Gather the material and secure as best you can with a staple gun. Screw an “L” bracket into the 2×4 and then above or directly onto your molding depending on your desired length.  Be sure to use a level and measuring tape when hanging your drapes!

Tip:  Not every window needs treatment.  Leave some higher or smaller windows natural to allow for more light!

Bedding

Drapery workshop owner, Brenda Lewis and Sloan show us how to perfectly fit a bed skirt without breaking a sweat.

If you’re an expert seamstress like Brenda Lewis you would be able to create this one-size fits all bed skirt.  If not then when your in the market for bedding try and look for an adjustable bed skirt. With a couple twist pins you can take in or let out your bed skirt to fit a variety of sized beds.  Another plus, you can remove you bedskirt to be cleaned with ease!

Combining several fabrics with different color schemes really brings an interesting aspect to a room design.  Don’t be afraid to experiment with bold colors and designs!

Spicing things Up

Tip: If you are tired of the like of a chair or it just too simple for the look you are trying to achieve just reupholster the piece to bring new life into the design of a room.
