What are you going to do about that dining room?

Worst yet, you may not even have a dining room which leaves you pondering how you will accommodate your holiday guests. No one enjoys balancing a full plate on their lap.

Visions of cranberry sauce and red wine landing on your new white sofa is enough to give any host nightmares. Maybe the only worst thought is to try and make that old matchy-matchy, Queen Anne dining set look contemporary and fresh.

The solution is simple. You need a new table and chairs. I’ve rounded up what I consider to be the pick of the bunch.

No dining room, no problem. You will have to carve out some space in your living area. A bistro table for two or four is a great option for small spaces.

The Simone Bistro by FourHands is a metal pedestal table. Pedestals are more practical that cumbersome four-legged small tables. Consider using two upholstered chairs from your living room and mix-in two wood, metal or Lucite chairs.

Another route is to select a table that can do double duty as a desk or library table when you are not entertaining. The Brennan Dining Table is a great selection for such a setting. The plank-style legs of brass-finished stainless steel feature an ombre pattern with an intersecting beam. It is interesting and will serve both functions.

Swivel chairs are great options for dining spaces that blend into your living space. The Rooney Swivel Chair is as chic as it is practical. Performance-grade upholstery with a lustrous feel is supported by hairpin legs in a vintage brass finish. I’d pair it with the Brennan Table.

When it comes to dining chairs, don’t buy the ones that match your table. Be more adventurous. Let the chairs tell their own style story with a smartness that matches your home’s bravura.

Very few hosts still drape a table with a cloth. They are more likely to use placements, a runner, chargers or nothing at all. Making the top of the table more important than ever. The Rocky dining table features a natural Smoked Saman wood top and a bronzed iron base. The deep richness of the wood enhances any table top setting.

If you room is generous enough that the base of your table shows, go for design detail. The Spider Dining Table’s base and top are works of art. Atomic iron lines support a brass-clad tabletop. Select chairs that won’t interfere with the view. The Wharton dining chair with its steel tubing and architectural inspired design balance handsomely.

Farmhouse décor has been upgraded. Woods are more finely finished with darker stains. Some classic styles even offer extension features so tables can be enlarged to accommodate holiday crowds. Benches are great seating options as are upholstered Vista dining chairs. Their canvas slipcovers soften the hard edges of post and rail tables and benches.

Take careful measurements before purchasing any furniture. Make sure you have at least 42” from the table edges to the wall or other furniture. No one wants to try and “skinny” by chair backs, especially after a big holiday meal.
